Meet the Founder—Cheryl’s Story of Transformation and Community
“I did not find Panama, Panama did find me.”
Cheryl Spann, founder of URevolution, made Panama City, Panama her home after decades of transforming communities across the United States. With dual Master’s degrees in Community Economic Development and Social Work, plus a Business Administration background, Cheryl brings unique insight to the African American relocation experience.
For over 26 years, she championed underserved populations—especially women and children—through strategic community development, policy advocacy, and cultural leadership programs. Her deep understanding of African American cultural needs and community dynamics drove her success in strengthening governmental initiatives and building supportive networks nationwide
Now residing in Panama, Cheryl applies this same community-building expertise to help African Americans navigate their own relocation journey. She understands the cultural considerations, emotional transitions, and practical challenges that come with moving abroad. Through URevolution, she bridges her experience in US community development with on-the-ground knowledge of Panama’s expat landscape.
Cheryl’s gift lies in combining cultural intelligence with real-world solutions—whether she was advocating for domestic violence victims in America or now helping build thriving expat communities in Panama. Her mission remains unchanged: empowering people to create the life and community they deserve.
Cheryl’s Journey from America to Panama
After decades of dreaming about life abroad, Cheryl made the bold decision to leave the United States and start fresh in Panama. What began as casual conversations with friends who had relocated internationally evolved into a serious exploration of countries like Ghana, Senegal, Jamaica, and St. Martin’s.
A chance suggestion from an ex-military friend to “check out Panama” changed everything. After subscribing to International Living magazine and researching extensively, Cheryl and her daughter took an exploratory trip during the 2022 holidays. Standing in Panama on New Year’s Eve, she made not just a resolution, but a “lifelong resolution” to pursue her dream of international living.
In 2024, Cheryl took the leap. She joined a black expat cultural relocation tour with Charlotte Van Horn, stayed for a month, and knew she’d found her new home. Despite initial housing challenges that required relocating from El Congrejo to Bahía de Vista, she persevered and built a new life in this vibrant, family-centered country.
Today, Cheryl thrives in Panama’s heart, facing the ocean surrounded by skyscrapers. She’s learning Spanish, building meaningful relationships, and working on digital mental health services for black expats considering relocation. Her journey proves that it’s never too late to grant yourself the life you’ve always dreamed of living.
“It’s not perfect, but it’s perfect for me. I’m just living differently as I age gracefully.” – Cheryl
